Rest WebServices in DNN

Rest webservices in Dnn - A popular web service design model that has emerged over the last few years are the rest webservices that are used in dotnetnuke websites. REST is based on principles that are used in the largest distributed application - the World Wide Web. This is neither a product nor a standard. There are many search engines, shops or booking systems that are already available as REST based Web services. The representation state transfer architecture (REST) is an architecture that describes how the Web should work. We are hoping that we will explain and give useful information on rest webservices in DNN to dotnetnuke developers below:

Background: Rest Webservices in DNN

Rest Webservices in DNN is generally referred to as 'Restful' webservices. This design model was introduced by Roy Fielding in the year 2000. He was one of the principle authors of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) for the 1.0 and 1.1 versions. The REST style is characterized by the following properties:

  • Communication takes place on call. The Client is active and requests a representation from the passive server and/or modifies a resource.
  • A resource can be addressed by a unique URI.
  • The client can request the representation of a resource in form of a document.
  • Representations can refer to further resources.
  • The server does not monitor the status of its clients. Each query to the server must contain all information that is necessary for interpreting itself.
  • Caching is supported. The server can mark its answers as cacheable or not cacheable.

Implementation of Restful Webservices in DNN

We recently implemented the restful webservices in DNN website for a US based client. This client has a business of manufacturing adapters and couplings for the utility, communications, and electrical wholesale market. The client was looking to get assistance in migration of their product list from the third party server to the application on its website. Since we had a prior experience with such type of tasks, the clients chose us for the project.

We implemented the WCF service for performing the task which was to migrate the data from one server to another where the service responsible to send data to our main application on request. The main reason for it is that performance of an application improves through wcf, otherwise data migration can be time consuming. Our developers had implemented the application through the restful webservices in dnn architecture in this DNN website. This whole project took less than 15 days for us to complete.
